How to Celebrate Halloween in Savannah

0

Savannah calls itself the most haunted city in America (New Orleans begs to differ), and the city takes pride in its Halloween festivities. First off, Halloween is not just celebrated on the 31st – it’s celebrated all month. Under drapes of eerie Spanish moss, rows of ominous antebellum homes and steeped in a chilling history of Civil War battles, epidemics and the colonial slave trade, Savannah is the perfect destination for a ghoulish good time. From haunted tours to parties in centuries-old buildings to spooky pub crawls, the oldest city in Georgia can make your spine tingle in many ways. Below are some of our top recommendations.

Ghosts & Gravestones

Hear tales of murder, mayhem and other mysteries on Ghosts & Gravestones’ 75-minute trolley tour of Savannah’s most haunted sites of the historic district. Included is entry to two of the city’s most infamous venues: the Andrew Low House and the Perkins & Son’s Chandlery, where stories of spirits moving about within its walls have circulated for centuries. This tour is rated PG-13 and no one under six will be allowed. Adults must accompany anyone under the age of 18.

Shannon Scott Tours

No visit to Savannah is complete without a visit to the legendary Bonaventure Cemetery, made famous by John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. A memorable way to tour it is by the hand of Shannon Scott – a masterful and entertaining storyteller and guide who specializes in the paranormal. The most popular is the Bonaventure by day tour, but consider taking the after-hours tour, which provides a rare peek into the cemetery after the gates are locked.

Grave Tales Ghost Tour

If you’re looking for something suitable for the entire family, try the Grave Tales Tour by Ghost City Tours. They say Savannah is buried on top of the dead – rumor has it that parts of the historic downtown area were built over cemeteries and many of its buildings remain haunted. You’ll visit the city’s various haunted mansions, homes, burial grounds and possibly even a Revolutionary War battlefield and learn of the ghosts, historic events and founders that shaped Savannah. Ages five and under are free.

The Zombie Ghost Tour

Blue Orb Tours is considered one of the most credible and entertaining tours in town. Their Zombies Tour adds in frightening tales from the large Voodoo and Hoodoo communities in Savannah along with the traditional tales from the Colonial era. Hear stories of the various undead such as hags, shape shifters and shadow beings. Uncensored and for adults 18+ only.

Savannah Haunted Pub Crawl
