San Francisco – known for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, cable cars and sea lions – is one of the most popular destinations in the world. No surprise there since the weather is pretty awesome year-round. We did some research and exploring of our own to nail down some of the best places for you to check out on your upcoming vacation. So, pack some snacks and grab your camera, because it’s time to do some exploring!
Golden Gate Park
Filled with beautiful gardens, museums, lakes and plenty of open space to get a kickball game going, Golden Gate Park can keep you busy for a few days. The park spans about three miles west to east, so if you don’t feel like walking the whole thing, you can rent a bike to explore on your own or as part of a guided bike tour. Be sure to stop by the San Francisco Botanical Garden, which is one of the most diverse gardens in the world that showcases over 8,500 different kinds of plants.
You must make a stop at Fisherman’s Wharf. One of the most popular tourist spots in San Francisco offers an unlimited amount to do as well as a wealth of knowledge on the history of San Francisco. From boat tours around the Bay area to taking photos of sea lions to all of the cute shops and fresh seafood stalls, there are enough activities to keep you busy all day long.
See the City by Way of Cable Car
A great way to see the sites and get around the city is by way of cable car (San Francisco has the world’s last manually operated cable car system). There are three different cable car lines that can take you popular spots like Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, Nob Hill and Union Square. Sit back and enjoy the ride but be sure to hold on tight as the cable car ventures through the steep hills. Pro tip: Be the first in line so you can get a seat that faces the bay. Go here for more information or to download a map of the routes.
Looking to get away from the city noise? Head north from San Francisco to Muir Woods to take a relaxing, peaceful stroll along hiking trails surrounded by old-growth coast redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. If you are looking for a short hike or long hike, Muir Woods has trails ranging from a half hour to an hour and a half.
