Asheville, North Carolina is a hidden gem nestled in the Appalachians of Western North Carolina. The hip city is full of outdoor adventures, historic buildings, world-renowned arts and music and, best of all: beer. With more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States, Asheville is a beer-lover’s oasis. Here are a few must-sees on your drinking tour of Beer City USA.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company
Sierra Nevada is a big time brewery with a small city feel. It is one of the top breweries operating in the US, but in the Mills River Taproom, you’ll feel like you’re in a backyard brewery. Just 10 minutes from the Asheville Regional Airport, your beer adventure can begin right away. Grab a flight and try some of the classics, like the Pale Ale or the Nooner Pilsner, or get creative with a more unique brew, like the Otra Vez or the Sidecar Orange Pale Ale. When you’re finished tasting, take a tour of the brewery – one of the most environmentally sustainable breweries in the US. Plan your trip here.
Wicked Weed Funkatorium
The Wicked Weed Funkatorium started as a family-owned brewery in 2009, and though it is now a local favorite, its family roots haven’t changed. The Funkatorium prides itself on providing boundary-pushing brews at the highest of quality. The brewers focus on creative ingredients with a wicked twist. Keep it classic with a Thirst Puncher American ale or an Abbey Dubbel Belgian ale. Feeling funky? Test out a beer listed on the “From the Funkatorium” or “Wicked from the Wood” lists. See the rest of the beers on tap here.
Green Man Brewery
Green Man Brewery has been brewing ales in Asheville since 1997. The brewery is named after the folkloric “green man” – a sculpture, drawing, or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves that represents the cycle of growth each spring. The brewery is constantly “growing” and reinventing its innovating and exciting flavors. When you visit, be sure to check out the original tasting room, Dirty Jack’s, and the new “brewtique,” Greenmansion. Taste their year-round classics, the Green Man ESB or the Sunseeker Pils, or get adventurous and try a seasonal Leaf Blower IPA or a Rambler Pale Ale. Learn more about Green Man here.
